VASCO, NOV 23
Orissa scored an exciting 3-wicket win against Goa in a nail-biting encounter on the last day of Cooch Behar U-19 cricket tournament at BITS Pillani ground, Zuarinagar, Sancoale, on Tuesday.
Despite lagging behind by 68 runs in the first inning against Goa, Orissa bounced back in the second inning to bundle out Goa for 164 runs while chasing 232 runs. An attacking Orissa scored 72 runs in just one hour and sealed the fate of Goa scoring 236 runs for seven in 41 overs.
Resuming the day at the overnight score of 97 for 4, Orissa stuck to their attack. Goa managed to strike an early blow to take their fifth wicket in the eighth over of the day as skipper Ganeshraj Narvekar struck Anikt Yadav’s leg. Narvekar finished with a five- wicket haul.
Orissa skipper Abhilash Mallick showed good resilience to score half a century to provide the much needed 104 runs sixth wicket partnership along with highest scorer Sumitesh Pradhan’s 81 runs not-out to snatch victory from Goa.
Ganeshraj Narvekar once again helped Goa to bounce back dismissing skipper Abhilash Mallick. Later, Srinivas Fadte got the seventh wicket of Orissa on 211.
The rain gods did play a spoilsport role as the match was stopped for nearly two hours following sudden cloudburst.
“We played a natural game and we did not allow pressure to pull us down while chasing our target,” stated Orissa skipper, Abhilash Mallic. He also appreciated his bowlers for restricting Goa for 164 in the second innings and the much needed performance from Sumitosh Praharaj.
Goan skipper Ganeshraj Narvekar was disappointed with the batting line-up. “We were defending a low target as the bowlers did well but we need to improve on our batting in the coming days to win.”
