CURCHOREM: Panchawadi Boys got the better of Yes Boss of Assolda, 1-0 to grab top honours at the 1st All-Goa 7-a-side Football tournament, organised by Friends Circle of Assolda at Panchayat ground, Assolda, on Sunday.
The teams attacked from the word go and kept the crowd on their toes. Striker Ashwin Fernandes’ lone goal helped Panchawadi in the 18th minute of second half proved to be the match-winner.
After a barren first half, Panchawadi doubled their efforts and managed to open the account. Seeing that rival team moving ahead Assolda struggled to reduce the margin but it did not bring any relief to them. They tried their level best but failed to get past the rival defense.
Panchawadi Boys were richer by Rs15,000 while Assolda had to be content with Rs 10,000.
Following individual prizes were awarded to Best player of the tournament: Ashwin Fernandes (Panchawadi). Best goalkeeper: Presley Furtado (Panchawadi).
Panch member of Assolda Panchayat, Custodio Fernandes was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of guest of honour, Antonio Pixote, former Assolda ZP member Rosario (Marathe) Fernandes, former Sarpanch of Avedem Panchayat Alelluia Alphonso, panch member Floriano Fernandes and other dignitaries.
Ayurvedic doctor and the oldest man in Assolda, 96-year-old Dr Joaquim Fernandez was felicitated.
