There was no score at half time. Panchwadi United were the brighter side at the start as they needed a win to qualify for the State play-off and starting attacking with a purpose.
They threaten the rival citadel time and again but were unable to score as rival goalkeeper Sameen Borkar was in his elements making superlative saves to keep their slate clean.
Post resumption, Panchwadi United were more dominant and could have found the mark soon after the break had not striker Paxton Gomes not muffed sitter.
Their breakthrough came in the 67th minute when winger Melvito Fernandes floated the ball from the left to striker Clifton Rebello, who beat his marker with the header to give team 1-0 cushion.
Stung by setback, Mormugao United increased the pressure on the rival goal and had umpteen scoring chances but their forwards failed to get past the rival rearguard.
First, striker Sushant Borkar rasping shot missed the target narrowly and later Abhijit Chodankar’s try was well blocked by Panchwadi United goalkeeper Johnson Bhagat.
Panchwadi United doubled the lead in the 81stminute when striker Paxton Gomes gently tapped it home off well measured cross from Melvito Fernandes.
After taking 2-0 lead, Panchwadi United continued to push ahead and in the 88th minute Melvito Fernandes, who atoned his earlier miss punished the rival goalkeeper with a clinical finish off well through pass from Bersel Viegas.
They had couple of scoring chances but Melvito and Cliffton spurn the easy chances with only rival goalkeeper to beat.
With the win, Panchwadi United Sports Club collected nine points from two matches while Mormugao United Cultural Club and Fr Agnel Youth Sports Club, Paroda yet to record win and have no point from one match.
