AMBELIM: Panjim Footballers beat Vasco SC 5-4 via the tie-breaker in match 3 of the Goa Sevens Premier League, organised by Goa Sevens and Ambelim Sports Club in association with Goa Football Association (GFA) at Ambelim Sports Complex, on Tuesday.
Mickey Fernandes and Franky Oliveira scored a goal each for the Port Town side while Gautam Dias and Stendly Fernandes scored for the capital side.
The Vasco side began the game with a formidable line up with might’s of Mickey Fernandes and Frankly Oliveira while the capital side team started their league’s first game with skipper Gautam Dias and Kunal Kundaikar in their starting seven.
The capital side began the game on a positive note with strikes from skipper onto the Port Town defence. Gautam Dias came close to scoring in the 3rd minute of the game after his shot from far hit the woodwork denying them the equaliser.
On the other side, Anil Gaonkar lobbed the ball from the right side inside to Franky who neatly placed it into the post, but the latter was in an off-side position.
Vasco SC finally took the lead after their skipper Micky Fernandes shot straight into the nets off a corner kick in the 25thminute. But the Panjim side made it all square just before half-time after Gautam Dias shot his powerful strike straight into the nets from far as both side went into the break with a levelled score-line.
Moving over into the second half, Franky Oliveira gave the Vasco side the lead again with a fine finish into the post which was in no reach of the Panjim keeper. The capital side, finding themselves one goal down again began attacking the rival back line. Gautam Dias was close to equalising once again but the latter’s shot hit the woodwork once again in the second half.
The Vasco side found themselves under extreme pressure after substitute Stendly Fernandes along with Kunal Kundaikar kept striking the Vasco post.
Stendly Fernandes’ powerful shot landed straight into the nets giving the equaliser for the capital side just before the final whistle.
In the tie-breaker, Gautam Das, Clive Miranda and Stendly Fernandes scored for the capital side while Minesh Kunkolkar converted for the Port Town with Franky Oliveira missing from the spot. By virtue of this, the Panjim side received two points while the Vasco side got a point.
