RAIA: In a nail-biting final, Parish Youth Nuvem triumphed over St Jose de Areal, 5-3 via the tie-breaker, after a 1-1 draw in regular time, in the finals of the 33rd Super Soccer tournament, in memory of late Joao Francis Fernandes, organised by United Boys of Dando-Colva, at St John the Baptist ground, Dando-Benaulim, on Sunday.
A large Sunday crowd braved frequent rains to witness the thrilling match. Both teams struggled with ball control on the wet field until Joywin D’Costa broke the deadlock for Nuvem in the 15th minute, finishing a defense-splitting pass from Inacio Colaco. Nuvem maintained their 1-0 lead through the first half.
In the second half, St Jose de Areal dominated play. Their persistence paid off when Tyson Carvalho’s late strike found the corner of the net, leaving Nuvem’s goalkeeper helpless.
The match proceeded to tie-breaker, where Parish Youth Nuvem showcased superior composure proved to be better shooters and skill, clinching the victory. Benaulim MLA captain Venzy viegas was the chief guest, Rev Father Simpliciano, Parish Priest Colva was the guest of honour and GFA executive committee members Anthony Fernandes, Patwin Figueredo, Cosme Oliveira, Ravi Cabral, Andrew Ferrao and Constancio Pal were the special invitees who distributed the prizes along with other dignitaries.
