PANJIM: Parra Altar Servers registered a convincing 3-0 win against Duler Altar Servers to emerge champions in the third edition of the 7-a-side football tournament for boys organised by Altar Servers of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, Moira, at the A.A.de Moira Club ground, recently.
At half time, the score was 1-0 in favour of Parra Altar Servers.
Parra Altar Servers started on an impressive note as they dictated pace from the middle and soon broke the deadlock in the 8th minute as talented Osrick Trinidade slotted home a beautiful goal of a solo effort.
Finding themselves down by a goal, Duler Altar Servers got into action two minutes later to find an equaliser with quick passing and constant break attack but in vain.
The entire first half proceedings were dominated by Parra Altar Servers.
Post resumption, Parra Altar Servers started with possession play and dominated in the mid-field.
Floyd Pereira made it 2-0 for Parra Altar Servers. Few minutes later, Joston Cardozo sealed the victory for his side by sending home a beautiful goal of a free-kick awarded to him, 3-0.
The winners took home trophy and a cash prize of Rs 5,000 whereas the runners-up were awarded trophy and Rs 2,500.
Individual prizes awarded were: best striker (Joston Cardozo, Parra) and best goalkeeper (Glen Rodrigues, Duler).
The tournament witnessed a participation of 10 teams from Moira, Parra, Duler, Ucassiam, Mapusa, Chorjuem, Nerul, Aldona, Bastora and Pomburpa.
Chief guest was Fr Simpliciano Fernandes, parish priest of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, Moira and guest of honour Denzil Franco, the India international defender and now Atlético de Kolkata player.
Speaking on the occasion, Denzil Franco, Atlético de Kolkata player stated, “To become a great footballer one has to start from scratch and grassroots is where one begins their career. I am grateful to football and Goa. If you remove football out of me I am no one. I have gone on to travel the world only due to football.”
“I would like to congratulate the winning team and better luck next time to the runners-up. I wish to see you’ll play for the National team someday,” he concluded.
