CALANGUTE: Penha de Franca defeated Goa Velha Sports Club 2-1 to move into the semi-finals of 1st Francisco and Matildinha Egipsy memorial inter-village football tournament organized by St Savio Sports Club, Calangute at Poriat ground, here, Friday.
Melvyn Rodrigues put Penha ahead in the 15th minute heading a cross from Akshay Shirvaikar.
Goa Velha could have drawn level in the 17th minute but Joel Gonsalves failed to net the ball in the open goal despite the rival goalkeeper already being beaten. Chattur Naik leveled the score off Vishant Pednekar in the 25th minute.
Changing over, both teams tried to outdo the other in search of the match-winner but it was Penha who had the last laugh with Melvyn scoring the all-important goal in the dying minutes.
