PANJIM: Pernem Deanery overpowered Verna Deanery 2-0 in the final to clinch the second Archbishop Trophy, organized by Diocesan Youth Centre and John Paul II Foundation for Sports Goa, at Raia village panchayat ground, recently.
Jason and Samson scored for Pernem Deanery repeating last year’s feat to annexe the trophy for the second time in succession. They overcame Canacona in the semi-final with a solitary goal victory scored by Jason, who was adjudged as the player of the final.
Verna Deanery overcame Mormugao Deanery in the first semi-final 1-0 with the lone goal scored by Josley, who was also declared player of the tournament.
Sidney of Pernem Deanery was the best goalkeeper of the final.
A total of 14 deaneries participated in the final round after the inter-parish matches held in the respective deaneries were completed over the last three months. Around 50 parishes participated in the event which was organized to bring in fellowship and faith formation among the Goan youth through the medium of sports and football in particular.
Fr Succor Mendes was the chief guest and distributed the prizes to the winners as Brendon Fernandes, who recently signed for Sporting Clube de Goa was the guest of honour.
The Sarpanch of Raia Village Panchayat Isidore was also present along with Fr Fermino Savio D’Souza, director of DYC and members of the John Paul II Foundation for Sports Goa.
Earlier, Melina welcomed while Worrel D’Souza proposed the vote of thanks.
