Pope John XXIII HS establish superiority in athletics meet

PANJIM: Pope John XXIII High School, Quepem emerged champions at the 39th Goa State Secondary and Higher Secondary under-17 athletics meet, at Bambolim Athletics Stadium.

Pope John won the championship with a tally of 28 points leaving behind the second position at 11 points.  To add to the remarkable feat, last years’ winners also created two new State records in triple jump and high jump in the under-17 boys category. While Rolan Rocha hopped, skipped and jumped to a distance of 12.42m, he also won a bronze medal in the javelin throw.
Aaron Rodrigues, who also holds the under-14 record created two years ago, leaped over the crossbar to a height of 1.68m, creating a new State record in the under-17 category.  In the pole vault event, Wam Fernandes came close to breaking the State record and settled with a gold medal clearing 2.50m (old record 2.55m) and Sweden Rebello also of Pope John picked up the silver medal at 2.30m.
Other medal winners were Princio Travasso, who claimed a gold medal in the long jump, silver medal in the triple jump and a bronze medal in 4X100m relay.
Jason Fernandes, Aliston Dias and Allan Vaz were other members of the bronze medal winners in the 4X100m relay team.  Aljina Fernandes won the silver medal in the 3km walk in the under-17 category for girls.
