MARGAO: SCC Cavelossim put up a stupendous performance to notch up a 2-1 win against Churchill Brothers in the GFA Taca Goa football tournament at Cansaulim ground, on Wednesday.
In the first half, SCC Cavelossim were leading 2-0. Despite the scorching heat, the game was played at a very fast pace from the kick off by both the teams. It didn’t take too long to break the deadlock for SCC Cavelossim as Presley Pinto converted a penalty kick in the 3rd minute. Churchill Brothers defender Jasper Pereira handled the ball inside the penalty area and referee awarded penalty to the rivals.
Churchill Brothers through Sandeep Subba in the 12th minute made a strong run on the right and shot a fierce low drive off a fine connect by Mayron Rodrigues but it was brilliantly saved by SCC Cavelossim goalkeeper.
Churchill Brothers were on the attack with more intent in search of an equaliser and in the 15th minute Flemino Dias made an attempt by taking a shot from the right flank but missed the target, off a supply by Sanwil D’Costa.
SCC Cavelossim in the next seven minutes controlled the proceedings with short passes and brilliantly netted the second goal with Sunny Rodrigues’ powerful grounder in the 23rd minute off a cross by Mathew Colaco from the right flank to make it 2-0.
Crossing over, the pacey forwards of Churchill Brothers kept the rival defenders on their toes and in the 47th minute tried to score but Sandeep Subba shot wide after receiving a diagonal supply from substitute Clinton Fernandes.
Later, Churchill Brothers managed to pull one back in the 88th minute. This time Sandeep made no mistake in sending the ball into the rival nets. Flemino Dias assisted.
Thereafter, both the teams’ forwards were guilty of wasting chances. Churchill Brothers Clinton shot hit the rival cross piece and rebound back into play in the 89th minute.
