PSPB clinch top honours in open and women events

PANJIM: Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) became the undisputed champions in both, open and women categories at the conclusion of the National team chess championship, at Caritas hall, here, on Thursday.

GM Adhiban B, GM Vidit Gujarathi, GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly, GM Abhijit Gupta and IM Murali Karthikeyan represented PSPB’s open team and scored 18 points while WGM Soumya Swaminathan, IM Nisha Mohota, WFM Monisha Gk and WFM Mahalaxmi M who represented their women team scored 13 points.
The Goan women team comprising of Aditee Prabhugaonkar, Aishwarya Thorat and Geno brand ambassadors WCM Swera Braganca and WCM Gunjal Chopdekar and Faiziya Khan created history with a fifth place finish and scored seven points. This was for the first time, a Goan women team had a podium finish in teams championship.
Railways A and Railways B were the second and third place winners in the open section while Air India and Airports Authority of India were the second and third place winners in the women section. The highlight of the day was a fine victory by M Barath over IM Atanu Lahiri (2308).
The Goan A team in the Open section finished on 19th position with nine points while the Goan B team in open section finished on 39th position with six points. In the women section, the Goan team B finished in the eighth position with six points.
Sudhanshu Jha, Commissioner of Income Tax was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in presence of D V Sundar, FIDE vice president; K Ramachari, DGM, Airports Authority of India; Kishor Bandekar, secretary of GCA; V Hariharah, secretary AICF; Fr Maverick Fernandes, Director of Caritas; M Ephrame, chief arbiter; Sagar Sacordekar, VP, GCA; Mahesh Kandolkar and Sanjay Belurkar, president and secretary of TTCA.
