PANJIM, FEB 27
Public Works Department beat Goa Medical College by 126 runs to enter the State level civil services cricket quarter-finals organised by DSYA at Chicalim sports complex.
Put to bat first, PWD started briskly scoring 39 runs in the first five overs, before losing their first wicket. The highlight of the PWD innings was the steady 68-run partnership for the 2nd wicket, between ex-Ranji player, Mahesh Gawandi (55 in 44 balls) and Umesh Naik (35 in 30 balls). A late flourish by Parsekar brothers, Naresh (23 in 14 balls) and Nilesh (10 in 5 balls) helped PWD to a respectable 172/6 in 20 overs. Sarfraz picked up two wickets for GMC.
In reply, GMC scored 46 runs. A fine spell of swing bowling aided by a strong breeze, by PWD debutant Mayur Naik (5/23), Shailesh Naik (2/9) and captain Gomakant Mahambrey (1/2) saw GMC folding at 46, leaving the PWD victorious.
The fantastic swing bowling of Mayur Naik earned him the man-of-the-match award.
Earlier in the pre-quarters finals, PWD defeated Directorate of Accounts by 13 runs.
Electing to bat, PWD started unsteadily losing first four wickets at the score of 49. But a gritty 65-run partnership between Umesh Naik (69 not out) and Nanda Kamat Dhakankar (16) steadied the PWD to a defendable 145/5 in 20 overs. Shankar was the pick of the bowlers for Accounts Dept claiming 2/15 in his allotted four overs, while Vishant, Krishna and Santosh took a wicket each.
In return, the Accounts Dept scored 132/8 in 20 overs. PWD’s Sameer Chodankar (3/17) and captain Gomakant Mahambrey (1/24).
A fantastic all-round performance by Umesh Naik earned him the man-of-the-match award.
