PANJIM: PWD Sports and Recreation Club beat Bannerman Sports Club by 23 runs and sailed into the pre-quarter finals of Patrakar Chashak’s 4th all-Goa white leather ball, coloured dress T-20 cricket tournament organised by Sanguem-Quepem Patrakar Sangh in association with the SAG, Kudchade Vikas Sanghatana and Sanvordem Gymkhana.
It was a fighting 53 by Suprat Gaonkar and his match-winning 42-run partnership with Gomakant Mahambrey (10), together with useful contributions by Umesh
Naik (23) and Someshwar Adpaikar (15) that helped the PWD to emerge winners.
Put in to bat, PWD’s Umesh Naik hit 2 sixes off the first 2 balls, but were subsequently reeling at 72/7. However, a 42 -run partnership between Suprat (53) and
Gomakant (10), enabled them to put up a respectable total. Vijesh Dessai (3/19) was the pick of Bannerman bowlers. He was ably supported by Baban Makander (3/30) and Arief (2/21).
Bannerman got off to a steady start and were comfortably placed going past the 50-run mark, thanks to some gritty batting by Saish Gaonkar (30) and Kaustubh Naik (15). But the introduction of double spin attack by the PWD led to a
sudden collapse with Anil Mashelkar (3/16) and skipper Gomakant (4/14), not only putting brakes on the run-rate but also picking wickets at regular intervals. Umesh Naik (2/17) also chipped in, thereby terminating the Bannerman’s innings 23 runs short of the victory target. Gomakant was adjudged man-of-the-match for his fine all-round display.
PWDSRC: 117 all out in 19.3 overs (Suprat Gaonkar 53, Umesh Naik 23, Someshwar Adpaikar 15, Gomakant Mahambrey 10, Vijesh Dessai 3/19, Baban
Makander 3/30, Arief 2/21) beat
Umesh Naik 2/17).
