NAVELIM: Parish Youth Nuvem pipped Varca Sports Club 1-0 to clinch the 37th Gold Silver Rolling Trophy inter-village tournament in memory of late Joaquim Faleiro organised by Navelim Sporting Club, at Rosary ground, Navelim, on Sunday.
The all-important goal was scored by Sanford Colaco in the first half.
Parish Youth started the match on the ascendancy and looked hungry for goals. The lone goal of the match came in the 10th minute when striker Sanford Colaco beat the rival goalkeeper Mohammed Shaikh with a snap shot. Stung by the setback, Varca Sports Club woke up from their slumbers and put the foot on the gas and nearly levelled the score when Nash Pereira’s blistering shot was well blocked by the rival goalkeeper.
At the other end, Parish Youth midfielders were creating chances and dominating the game.
The flanks were utilised well but their forwards profligacy prevented them from increasing their tally. Parish Youth came close to doubling the lead when Stephen Colaco’s rasping shot was well taken care of by the Varca Sports Club goalkeeper Mohammed Shaikh.
Post resumption, all attempts of a comeback from Varca Sports Club were thwarted by the Parish Youth. Nash Pereira and Klinson Pereira’s attempted shots from close range which was well parried away by the Nuvem goalkeeper. Parish Youth had couple of scoring chances but their forwards failed to find the net.
Parish Youth, Nuvem were awarded Rs 50,000 and a glittering trophy while Varca Sports Club had to settle for Rs 40,000 and a trophy.
Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of guests of honour Elvis Gomes, President of GFA, Benjamin Silva, Ex- Velim MLA, Fr George Norbert Aguair, Vicar of Our Lady of Rosary Church, Navelim, Navelim MLA Luizinho Faleiro, Edwin Cipru Cardozo, ZP member, Navelim Constituency, Navelim Sarpanch Wilma Silva, club officials and other dignitaries.
