Quepem Government College, MES emerge champions

Best Athlete Male and Female of the Championship were awarded to Moses Mascarenhas of Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science, Margao, and Shimron Nathan of Don Bosco College, Panjim, respectively

PANJIM: MES Vasant Joshi College of Arts and Commerce, Zuarinagar and Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Quepem emerged champions in the Goa University’s 36th Inter-Collegiate Athletics Championship Men and Women 2023-24 respectively organised by Goa University at the SAG’s Athletics Stadium, Bambolim, recently. 

Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Quepem, were the Men’s runners-up, while Don Bosco College, Panjim, were the second runners-up.

Rosary College of Commerce and Arts, Navelim, were the Women’s runners-up, while St Xavier’s College, Mapusa, were the second runners-up.

Around 1,000 athletes from 46 colleges affiliated to Goa University participated in the three-day championship. Vice Chancellor of Goa University Prof Harilal Menon was the chief guest for the opening ceremony.

Like last year, this year also the championship saw the use of photo finish technology for all track events and mixed relay was also included, which brings the total events to 40. First day of the championship saw a new meet record being created by 4x400m relay women’s teams of Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Quepem clocking the time 4:33.34sec.

Third day of the championship witnessed two meet record being created, one which was created in Men’s Hammer Throw by Rudra Bhosle of Dnyanprassarak Mandal’s College and Research Center, Assagao, with a distance of 34.23 metres and another one in Women’s Heptathlon by Ankita Gaonkar of Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Quepem, by accumulating 2,543 points.

Best Athlete Male and Female of the Championship were awarded to Moses Mascarenhas of Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science, Margao, and Shimron Nathan of Don Bosco College, Panjim, respectively. Prof Ramesh Pai, Dean, School of Physical and Applied Sciences, Goa University, graced the prize distribution ceremony as chief guest, and presented trophies and medals to the winners along with Balachandra Jadar, Assistant Director of Physical Education and Sports, Goa University.
