MAPUSA: FC Goa registered a thumping 4-1 win over Churchill Brothers Sports Club in the 10th round match of the GFA’s Professional league, at Duler Stadium, here, on Tuesday.
The reschedule November 27 match between the top teams of GPL saw one of the poorest turn out for the match, of just 60 paid spectators being the festivity of St Francis Xavier.
FC Goa went into the breather with a goal cushion from Sweden Fernandes’ header.
Though Churchill Brothers started with four I-league players foreign striker Willis Plaza, keeper Md. Jafari Mondal, Quan Gomes and Clencio Pinto. However, the Young Gaurs surged ahead in the fourth minute. A cross by skipper Leander D’Cunha was smartly headed in the goal by U-20 Sweden Fernandes.
As the match progressed, the Red Machines pressed hard for the equaliser but Willis Plaza failed to find the back of the net twice.
On crossing over, Young Gaurs almost netted their second goal in the 54th minute but Lalnuntlluanga Bawitlung’s header rebounded off the post and the ball rolled back to him but he blasted wide.
Just two minutes later, a combination from both the substitutes Shubert Pereira and Mauvin Borges who were brought into play by Asst coach Mario Soares at the start of the second session saw Red Machine level terms.
Shubert sent a through pass to Mauvin who darted inside the penalty box and drilled a stiff grounder to the far corner of the goal.
It did not take long for the Young Gaurs to double their lead when Lalnuntlluanga collected a through pass from Lalawmpuia and beat the Churchill keeper Md.Jafar with a low grounder to make it 2-1.
Churchill had two chances to reduce the margin but Young Gaurs defender Brian Faria blocked two dangerous crosses from Nongmeikapam and Shubert.
In the 78th and 79th minutes, Young Gaurs slammed two quick goals to pull the curtains down for Churchill Brothers through Flan Gomes and substitute Aaren DSilva to make it 4-1.
Flan Gomes collected a long floater from the midfield and after covering some ground beat the on rushing keeper Md. Jafar with a neat placement to make it 3-1.
Hardly had the cheers died down this time Aaren D’Silva controlled a cross from Sarineo Fernandes and scored with rasping left footer to make it 4-1.
