PANJIM: Geno Pharmaceuticals Brand Ambassador Riya Savant won silver medal in the under-14 girls category at the Asian Youth Chess Championship held at New Delhi.
Riya remained undefeated throughout the tournament with five victories and four draws to clinch the title with seven points out of nine.
R Vaishali of Tamil Nadu won the championship. Riya, Std IX student of St Mary’s High School, Mapusa started as the 10th seed in the tournament. Altogether, 32 players from 16 countries participated in her group.
Riya had earlier won gold medal last year at Iran and silver at Beijing in 2010. She also gained 85 ELO points thus crossing the 2000 ELO rating mark.
This is her ninth international medal as she has won three Asian, one world and three commonwealth and two world school medals.
President of Goa Chess Association Vinay Tendulkar, Secretary Kishor Bandekar and Treasurer Ramdas Sawant congratulated Riya on her medal winning performance.
Riya will be participating in Open Chess Championship at Sharjah from November 14 to 24.
