Rohan stars in Geno’s win; Marna edge past St Savio; Candolim rally to hold AA de Moira

MAPUSA: St. Anthony’s SC, Marna, registered a hard fought 2-1 win over St. Savio’s SC, Calangute, in a GFA First Division match at Duler stadium, here on Sunday.

With today’s win, St. Anthony’s take the top spot with 10 points from 5 matches, while St. Savio’s stays on 6 points from 5 matches.

Marna started promisignly. In the 20th minute, Sandeep Pomburpekar found unmarked Pushparaj Mandrekar, who had just St. Savio’s custodian Selwyn D’Souza at his mercy, but he shot straight into the waiting hands of the goalkeeper.

St. Savio’s hit back and their Under-20 Jovito sent a perfect floater to well positioned Alister Fernandes whose hot blooded shot was, however, saved by the Marna custodian.

Marna’s Pushparaj had three chances to score but St. Savio’s custodian Selwyn brought off outstanding saves.

On crossing ends, custodian Selwyn was back in action as he fisted Sandeep’s strike over the crossbar.

It was in the 49th minute that Sangam Pednekar sent a quick pass to Dalesh Pedneka,r who dribbled past two rival defenders and scored.

However, St. Savio’s came and substitute Nigel Silveira’s 30-yard try   beat the Marna custodian.

Just six minutes before the end, Marna’s substitute Gauresh Dhargalkar scored the match-winner off a goalmouth melee.

At Salvador do Mundo ground, Candolim SC managed to hold A A de Moira to a 1-1 draw. Clifton Fernandes put Moira ahead in the added time of the first session only to find Candolim’s Clinton Niasso score the equalizer in the 49th minute of second session.

At Guirim ground, Geno FC registered a 4-1 win over Dunes SC, Mandrem. Rohan Pednekar netted a hat-trick while Salu Santos added his name to the scorers list. Anthony Lobo scored a late goal for Dunes.
