PANJIM: Madgaon Royals defeated Madgaon Super Strikers by eight wickets and 83 balls in the Goa GSB Unity Cup T20 cricket tournament organised by Goa GSB Sports and Charitable Trust in association with Goa Saraswat Samaj, at SK Ground Malcornem, on Saturday.
In the second match of the day, Sinq Rangers defeated Canacona Warriors by 6 wickets.
Replying to Canacona 187 for 8, they won the match by losing just four wickets in 18.1 overs. This is the first time in the tournament that a team has won while chasing such a huge total.
After Saturday’s matches, Sinq Rangers are first in Group B, while Madgaon Royals tops Group A. Both teams have six points each.
Madgaon Super Strikers suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Madgaon Royals in the morning session match. The Super Strikers innings ended in just 50 runs in 12.3 overs. Shaunit Savardekar, who was adjudged man of the match, was impressive in 2.3 overs with figures of 4/5. Was well supported by Vikram Gaitonde took 3 wickets for 8 runs. The Royals reached the modest target in just 6.1 overs. Damodar Pai Patnekar (18) and Mahendra Audi (24) gave the team a 38-run opening stand.
The match in the afternoon session turned out to be a high scoring game. Batting first, Canacona Warriors posted a huge total of 187 for 8. For Canacona Viraj Puranik (40) and Sukrut Pai (20) gave the team a 58-run opening stand. Canacona’s No. 6-10 batters added to the team’s total with double digit scores.
Chasing a huge target, Samruddh Bharne (35) and Sahil Adwalpalkar (32) added 62 runs for the first wicket. Sairaj Dhond scored a quickfire 35 off 18 balls. After Ved Mahambre (4) failed, Sanat Mhapne (28 not out) and Mihir Kundaikar (36 not out) put on 60 runs for the fifth wicket to win the team. Sairaj Dhond won the man-of-the-match award.

Canacona Warriors 187 for 8 in 20 overs (Viraj Puranik 40, Amey Rajadhyax 23, Guru Bale 23 not out, Sairaj Dhond 29-2, Amey Prabhudesai 33-2, Megh Netravalkar, Sanat Kamat, Ved Mahambre 1 wicket each) lost to Sinq Rangers 188 for 4 in 18.1 overs (Mihir Kundaikar 36 not out, Samruddh Bharne 35, Sairaj Dhond 35, Saurabh Prabhu Desai 22-1, Viraj Puranik 34-1).
