MARGAO: Salgaocar Football Club edged past Churchill Brothers Sports Club 1-0 in the final Goa Pro League match to end the season on a high at Nagoa panchayat ground, Verna, on Sunday.
In an exciting and intense game, The Greens scored the all-important goal in the dying minutes of the game through Leny Pereira.
The first half saw the fans on the edge of their seats as both the teams were involved in a deadlock. The teams created multiple chances but failed to convert. The front lines of both teams were busy throughout as they combined well and displayed some good moves.
In second half, The Red Machines came down heavily on The Greens but vigilant Salgaocar FC defence managed to keep the Churchill Brothers SC forwards at bay. Leny was instrumental at the back as he marshalled the defence line smartly making some crucial tackles.
Turning point of the match was the sending off of Churchill Brothers SC skipper Elvis Barreto for a rash tackle. The Greens were quick to capitalise on this as they managed to sneak one in through a corner in the closing stages as Brian Mascarenhas send in a well directed cross to find the man in form Leny at the end who made no mistake to place the ball past the rival goalkeeper to snatch the winner for Salgaocar FC.
