Salgaocar FC get past Vasco SC

Selwyn and Devendra score a goal each for the Green Brigade

MAPUSA: Salgaocar Football Club got the better of Vasco Sports Club 2-0 in the 10th round match of the Goa Professional League played at Duler Stadium, here, on Saturday.
After Saturday’s encounter, Salgaocar continued their ascendancy towards the top of the table and remain on fourth place with 17 points from eight matches, while Vasco are stuck with 10 points from ten matches.
After a goalless first half, Salgaocar FC got both the goals in the second half through Selwyn Miranda (68th min) and Devendra Murgaokar (86th min).
Vasco after losing their last match to Dempo started the proceeding on the front foot and in the eighth minute, U-20 Hussain Pinjar’s fierce right footer was brilliantly saved by a full stretched Salgaocar keeper Jaison D’Mello.
Hussain Pinjar who was a threat to the Salgaocar FC defence almost put Vasco ahead three minute later with a mazy run but some alert defending by Rollwin Almeida averted the danger with U-20 player Aman Govekar providing the pass.
Mackroy Peixoto then tried his luck from distance for Salagoacar FC in the 23rd minute with a long ranger which just sailed over the post.
Vasco keeper Sanju Thapa then brought up a fine stop to deny Saurabh Patil in finding the net for Salgaocar in the 36th minute from a goal mouth scramble.
Crossing end, both the teams kept attacking each other citadel and in the 55th minute Vasco Beneston Barretto’s well struck shot just missed the target by inches while at the other end a reverse kick from Salgaocar’s Selwyn Miranda flew over the crossbar.
Vasco were really unlucky not to be ahead in the 62nd minute when Denvil Fernades’ header from Sanwil D`Costa’s free-kick which was travelling goal wards saw keeper Jaison D’Mello somehow get a hand and push the ball out for a corner.
Salgaocar FC finally got the much needed breakthrough in the 68th minute when Devendra Murgaonkar’s shot was well stopped by keeper Sanju but from the rebound Selwyn Miranda who was lurking nearby slotted the ball into the goal to give his side the lead.
In the 86th minute, Devendra managed to get his name on the score-sheet finding the net from the tightest angle after being teased by Ronaldo to secure full three points to his team.
Devendra almost got his second and Salgaocar FC’s third goal in the 89th minute but keeper Sanju Thapa dived acrobatically to push his header out for a corner.
