Salgaocar FC Jrs take on Mangor SC in final

The Greens under-19 team defeat Chicalim Sports Club 2-0 in a semi-final playoff to qualify for GFA’s Second Division League

PANJIM: Salgaocar FC Juniors will take on Mangor Sports Club in the GFA Third Division League Mormugao Zone final on December 2, at T.B Cunha Sports Complex, Cansaulim, at 4 p.m.
Salgaocar FC are one big happy family currently, with none of the club’s teams able to put a foot wrong. A day after the senior team clinched the Goa Professional League title, the under-19 team defeated Chicalim Sports Club 2-0 in a semi-final playoff to qualify for GFA’s Second Division League for the upcoming season.
Mangor Sports Club, who have also qualified to Second Division League, and Salgaocar FC Juniors will go all out to emerge Mormugao champions.
The Greens came up against a determined Chicalim, who finished runners-up in Group A in the play-offs on Sunday.
With a place in the Second Division at stake, the Chicalim lads put up a stubborn resistance and threw themselves at everything. Coming in to the game as favourites, Salgaocar’s juniors seemed to feel the pressure as they missed several chances in front of goal through the course of the game.
They had to wait until the 25th minute to break the deadlock. Harmanjot Singh did the spade work on the right, dribbling past a couple of defenders before sending in a sublime cross that was met by a sliding Denil Rebello at the far post.
The teams went into the breather with the lone goal separating them.
Upon resumption, the Greens could have increased their tally in the first 10 minutes. However, resolute defending and poor finishing let them down. The Greens had to wait until the 77th minute to double their lead. Harmanjot was once again involved as his stiff grounder slipped out of the keeper’s grasp and from a tight angle Constancio was at hand, effectively seal the game for the Greens.
The Salgaocar’s under-14 made sure the celebrations didn’t end there as they thumped Goa United 5-0 in a GFA U-14 First Division League match.
The heroes of the win against Dempo Juniors, Samward Pereira and Aaron Barreto, who both bagged hat-tricks in the previous encounter against the traditional rivals, were once stars of the day as they both bagged a brace whilst Tyson Silva helped himself to a goal thereby ensuring Salgaocar’s victory.
