PANJIM: Salgaocar Football Club rode on Liston Colaco’s brace as they edge past East Bengal 2-1 in their first fixture of the U-18 I-League match, in Kolkata, on Thursday.
Tanmay Ghosh scored for the home team.
The game began with a high pitch for the visitors as they were continuously outsmarting and haunting the defensive line of the East Bengal U-18’s.
Liston from the start had put things into high gear. He continued to taunt the opposition with nimble feet to get past them to create numerous chances at the East Bengal goal.
One such crucial attempt came in the 10th minute when Liston dribbled past three defenders to set up his teammate who however sent the ball flying past the goal post.
Liston was the one to draw first blood when in the 29th minute he got past the East Bengal defence but was brought down to gain a penalty. Liston made no mistake to convert from the spot kick.
The Greens weren’t satisfied with this as they came back numerous times to get another goal but in vain. The score at lemon break stood 1-0.
No sooner did the second half start, Liston secured his brace as he headed in to make it 2-0.
The game seemed to slow down after this attempt but the home team were determined to not leave empty handed. In the dying minutes the home side showed some character as they mounted their attacks and kept the pressure on until the 88th minute when one of the Green’s defender in attempt to clear the ball headed it straight into the path of Tanmay Gosh who made no mistake in finding the back of the net.
East Bengal tried hard to restore parity as the teams went head-to-head but the visitors held on to their slender lead.
