MARGAO: Host Verna Sports Club overcome Ambelim Sports Club 1-0 to cruise into the quarter-finals of all-Goa Verna Panchayat Cup inter-village football tournament, organized by Verna Sports Club, at Verna ground, Friday.
In an evenly posed battle both the teams displayed attacking brand of soccer and kept the crowd on their toes.
However, it was Verna Sports Club, who backed by the home crowd intensified their attacks and tested the rival goalkeeper with pit shots.
The all-important goal came in the 10th minute when striker Santan Rego bulge the net from close range.
Stung by that setback, Ambelim Sports Club tried their best but failed to get past the rival alert defence.
Crossing over, Ambelim Sports Club showed urgency and trouble the rival defence with well orchestrated raids but rival defenders stood tall in protecting the slender lead.
Verna Sports Club had couple of scoring chances but their forwards were guilty of muffing sitters.
