Santosh, Anup and Deva in finals

PANJIM: Goa’s Santosh Harijan, Deva Naik and Anup Prasad book the finals berths in the first Goan Invitation Boxing Championship for men organised by Goa Boxing Association at the newly inaugurated Boxing Hall, at Peddem, Mapusa, on Saturday.

The final bouts will begin at 2.30 p.m. In the 20 semi-finals bouts held, Santosh Harijan won against M. Shaikh of Army Sports Institute 3-0 in the 52kg weight category.
In the 56 kg weight category, Yogesh of Delhi punched out Kamal Mujahid through a technical knockout in the first round itself. 
Deva managed to get past Dilshad Thind of Central Police Reserve Force in the 60 kg weight category while Anup defeated Santosh of Punjab through a TKO.
It was a tough day for many boxers, as the new rule of playing without headgear gave many injuries to the boxers.
In the evening women bouts, Andhra Pradesh’s Nikhat Zareen, Junior World Champion proved too good for Jaspret Kaur from Punjab in the 52 Kg weight category 3-0 while in the 51 kg weight category Goan Priyanka Khandeparkar went down fighting to Muskan Kaur from Punjab 0-3.
The last bout of the evening saw Fahan Shaikh of Goa lose to Kanwaljeet Singh of BSF in the 91+ category 0-3. 
On Friday, Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza inaugurated the boxing hall in the presence of Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Ramesh Tawadkar, MLA Provorim Constituency and president of Goa Boxing Association Rohan Khaunte, Vice President Lenny Da Gama, Vice President Filipe Dias, Vice President Shailesh Shetty and Secretary Clyde Lobo, Chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council Sandeep Fulari, Director of Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs Y. B. Tawde and Deputy Director Juliana Colaco.
On the occasion, Dy Chief Minister Francis felicitated Nikhat Zareen, for winning the silver medal at World Junior Championship, and her coach E. Chrinjeevi, for contribution towards the sport.
Local hero and an idol for many Goan boxers Santosh Harijan was also felicitated.
