SAO JOSE DE AREAL: Hosts Sao Jose de Areal defeated Cortalim Villagers 1-0 in the final to lift the 35th Sao Jose de Areal Panchayat Cup, organised by Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club, at Padribhat ground, Sao Jose de Areal on Sunday.
Sao Jose de Areal should have scored in the 16th minute through Alvito Moura but Jose Lucas defender of Cortalim blocked his move, thereafter Rostan Vaz of Cortalim’s solo effort missed the net of Areal in the 20th minute.
Sammer Naik goalkeeper of Areal saved a powerful shot of Jose Lucas in the 43rd minute.
The match winner for Areal came in the 48th minute of Alvito Moura curler.
There after Cortalim tried to equalise but Areal sealed the defence border lines till the end of final whistle.
The winners were awarded Rs 40,000 and trophy, while the runners-up pocketed Rs 30,000 and trophy.
Former MLA Filipe Neri Rodrigues was the chief guest for the final and gave away the prizes in the in the presence of Fr Jayson Vaz, Assistant parish priest of St Joseph Church, ZP Member Clafacio Dias, Sarpanch of Sao Jose de Areal Minguel Gomes and other dignitaries and club officials.
