PANJIM: Sateri Sports Club got the better of Galaxy Boys 5-3 via tie-breaker to emerge champions in the Michael Football Cup, XII inter-ward football tournament, The tournament is dedicated in memory of football player Remedious Almeida, organised by United People of Ribandar in collaboration with players from Sao Pedro, Fondvem, Patto, Manaswada and Chimbel, at Ribandar football ground, on Sunday.
Sateri SC opened the account in the 10th minute when Sagar shot a cross ball into the nets.
Crossing over, Galaxy Boys regrouped with renewed ideas and started attacking to find the equaliser. This time, they had the upper hand in the proceedings.
It was Vishal Adkonkar, who shone for Galaxy Boys in the dying minutes, to score the much needed equaliser.
At the end of regulation time, both the teams settled for a 1-1 draw.
In the resultant tie-breaker, Sateri Sports Club proved to be better shooters scoring through the boots of Nelish, Sachin, Latish and Saru while for Galaxy Boys only Dattaraj and Rohan could find the back of the nets.
In all 16 teams participated.
Vithal Chopdekar, Mayor of Corporation of the City of Panaji was the chief guest and presented the trophy to the winners in the presence of guest of honour former player of Panvel Sports Club Jose Coutinho, special invitees former CCP corporator and organising member Vivina Nasnodkar, social workers Dominic Fernandes and Acascio Tavares.
Chopdekar in his address promised all cooperation from CCP for the development of the ward football ground, which is in bad shape.
He informed that most of the acquisition process of the ground has been completed with the help of former corporator Vivina and after completion it can be used by the wards’ youth to develop their football skills.
Organiser Michael Fernandes urged the mayor to speed up the work of the ground so that the wards’ youth can use it, who now have been playing for the top clubs of the State in the age category level.
