CHINCHINIM: Sporting Club of Davorlim pipped Alberto Developers C.D.J Ribandar 1-0 in the final to clinch the Our Lady of Merces Cup organized by Sirlim Sports Club, at Chinchinim Church ground, on Monday.
The teams displayed an attacking and defensive role in both the sessions.
CDJ Ribandar would have the ball at the back of SC Davorlim net through Shailesh Baliye but his downward header from the rival box went two feet wide in the very second minute.
Selwyn Miranda tried a long range effort for SC Davorlim but the rival goalkeeper was equal to the task in the 10th minute.
An acrobatic shot by Shailesh of CDJ Ribandar would have paid the first dividend to CDJ Ribandar in the 31st minute but Andrew Colaco, defender of SC Davorlim tackled his move.
Change of ends saw both teams trying to score the match winner but it was Selwyn Miranda, who with a rasping drive scored the all-important goal for SC Davorlim in the 40th minute off Venson Figuerido connect.
Thereafter, CDJ Ribandar tried to come back in the game with the efforts of Dario Rodrigues and Shailesh but to their bad luck both missed the sitters in the 45th and 50th minutes.
Etesh Haldankar for CDJ Ribandar also made an attempt to equalise but failed to convert in the 53rd minute.
The winners pocketed Rs 40,000 plus trophy while runners-up took home Rs 35,000 plus trophy.
Peter Rodrigues, first National referee of Goa, was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Velim Constituency MLA Benjamin Silva, Fr Menino Vales and club officials.
The following individual prizes were awarded: Best Discipline team UC Nerul, best losing team of the tournament St Anthony SC, Marna-Siolim; best defender Valito Miranda (Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda), 1st goal of the final Selwyn Miranda, 1st goal of the tournament Vipul Pednekar (St Anthony SC, Marna-Siolim).
Earlier, chairman Avilo Viegas welcomed. Oscar Da Costa, Arthur Viegas, Milagres Rodrigues, Domnic Noronha, Valerio Rodrigues and Teddy Rodrigues introduced the players to the guests. Nrenush Rodrigues compered.
Later, President Oden Da Costa proposed the vote of thanks.
