MAPUSA, DEC 1
Lezley Fernandes volleyed home in the 60th minute to give Sesa Football Academy a narrow 1-0 victory over Faria Sports Management in the Kingfisher Pro League, at Duler stadium, here, on Wednesday.
The score was 0-0 at the breather.
The referee had a busy time dishing out seven yellow cards in total. Freddy Faria, Edison Sequeira, Chhunanzika, Gobinda Adhikary and Gauresh Naik were the five players booked for Faria, while Gabriel Fernandes and Jayganesh Goltekar were booked for Sesa.
Sesa drew off the vitality from their opponents, exhausting them with their short passing game. It was not their best performance this season by a long shot, but coach Clifford Chukwuma would have been happy to take the vital three points, having completed the double over Faria this season.
Faria slumped to their fifth defeat in five matches and are in relegation trouble. The enthusiasm and team spirit which the team had at the start of the season seems to have all disappeared. Their only consolation was that left back U-20 midfielder Freddy Faria had a reasonably good game, showing that he can adapt to team tactics and play out of position at left back. The ex-Vasco Academy player looks like a bright prospect for the future.
In the 15th minute, Faria missed the opportunity to take the lead after Edison Sequeira crossed from the left, with the ball eluding everyone in the box and Faria’s Manesh Oliveria failed to find the target.
In the 33rd, Sesa’s Lezley Fernandes had his long range attempt tipped over by the Faria custodian.
Just before the break, Sesa made their first change. Winger Sidroy Afonso made way for Girish Naik. Girish immediately moved over to play on the left wing while Valerio Rodrigues moved over to the right wing.
After the breather, Faria’s Milton Gomes saw his long range effort come back off the cross bar.
In the 60th, Inacio Colaco delivered in a corner and the ball got a lucky deflection before falling into the path of Lezley, who fired in from close.
For the remaining half an hour, Faria moved forward in search of the equaliser. Faria made changes to their midfield later on, to try and inject more energy, but again failed in their vigour.
