MUMBAI: So impressed was Stephen Constantine with Sehnaj Singh’s performances this season that he didn’t hesitate to hand the young Mohun Bagan midfielder a start against Oman, a team ranked 40 places above in the crucial 2018 World Cup and 2019 Asian Cup joint qualifier group D tie, on Thursday.
His performances against the likes of Pune FC, Bharat FC, Sporting Clube de Goa and Bengaluru FC certainly got Constantine and Shanmugham Venkatesh to take notice.
“I had a good season with Bagan and was pleased to win the maiden I-League title for the club. However, if at the start of the season you would have told me I would make it into the national team that would have surprised me,” he said.
After stints at Gurdaspur Academy and Chandigarh Football Academy (CFA), Sehnaj was roped into the India under-19 team by former India technical director, Colin Toal.
Thereafter when Indian Arrows, which was later rechristened as Pailan Arrows, took shape, he was inducted into the squad although he found playing time hard to come by.
