Sherwin wins all-India Open Scrabble tourney

PANJIM: Mumbai’s Sherwin Rodrigues emerged winner of the 15th all-India Open Scrabble tournament, organised by the Scrabble Association of Goa, at the PCCE College Hall, Verna, recently.

PANJIM: Mumbai’s Sherwin Rodrigues emerged winner of the 15th all-India Open Scrabble tournament, organised by the Scrabble Association of Goa, at the PCCE College Hall, Verna, recently. 
Three days and 24 games of grueling wordplay, Sherwin Rodrigues, India’s top rated player, emerged clear winner. 
Udayan from Pune, and Eeshan from Mumbai took the second and third places respectively.
This year, Goa saw the largest turnout, with 58 players in all which include 49 from all parts of India (places include Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad). This edition also witnessed two international players –Michael Tang from Singapore and Selwyn Lobo from the UAE. The tournament, which is internationally rated, had seven local players.
Scrabble, a very popular game, is fast becoming a worldwide competitive mind-sport like chess. The world championship held last year in Kenya was won by Akshay Bhandarkar of Bahrain, an Indian origin, who in fact represented India in the past.
The prizes were given away by the chief guest Vikrant Naik, General Manager of Bennet & Bernard Hospitality.
