MARGAO: Riding on a gritty display, Corps of Signals held Wilred Leisure Sports Club, Curtorim to a goalless draw in a GFA First Division league at Assolna ground, Monday.

The teams set a fast pace as they went on the offensive, but once the Signals struck rhythm they called the shots against the rival citadel and enjoyed a lion share of the exchanges .

The first good chance came in the 15th minute but striker T C Lalhuaf Zauva muffed a sitter with only the rival goalkeeper to beat.

Later, Signals had a golden opportunity but Vikas Kale spurned an easy chance with Curtorim goalkeeper at his mercy.

Wilred’s only noteworthy move came midway in the opening sessions but Agnelo Colaco squandered an easy chance with only the Signals goalkeeper at his mercy.

Wilred put up a better display on resumption but their efforts were nullified by Corps of Signals defenders, Sirajjet, Ashangir and Sanjay Yadav.

Wilred nearly broke the deadlock in the 78th minute when striker Sertorio Monteiro outpaced a rival defender but  Signal goalkeeper Niyas Mon came to his side’s rescue.

Wilred nearly scored the match-winner as Sertorio raced towards the rival box but his snap shot was thwarted by a Signals defender.

With this draw, Wilred Club collected 12 points from 7 matches while Corps of Signals have seven points from seven matches.

“Referee Jose Fernandes killed our match. The fouls and one deliberate handball by a Corps of Signals player called for a penalty, but it was overlooked. How could the referee make  such a blunder,” queried Joe Vaz, Wilred Leisure president. “We have always been victims of unfair refereeing.”
