MAPUSA: Churchill Bros will look to maintain their top spot in the league and garner three points against United Sikkim Football Club in a 16th round I-League football match at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Sunday, at 3.45 p.m.
Churchill Bros enjoy a clear three point lead at the top of the table and have a match in hand but technical director Subhash Bhowmick is not thinking of the title as yet.
“It is too early to think of anything. We have several matches to go and we have just crossed the half-way stage now. Let us win more matches and then we can see where we stand,” said Bhowmick.
Churchill have won both their matches at Duler’s artificial turf and are favourites to add three points to their tally against bottom-placed Sikkim United.
“Favourites are only on paper. It will be 11 versus 11 and their chances will be as good as ours,” said the Churchill technical director.
Despite of what Bhowmick says, Churchill will be clear favourites. They have been on a roll and have scored nine goals in their last two matches. Bhowmick’s only worry will be whether to start with Lebanese striker Akram Moghrabi or Gabonese striker Henri Arnaud, who rose from the bench in the previous game and scored a winning brace.
Sikkim United are at the bottom of the pool with 10 points from 14 matches and new coach Nathan Hall, who took charge only recently, is yet to taste a victory.
The northeast side came closest to tasting a victory – after Hall took charge – in the last match against Mumbai. They led 2-1 until the last minute of added time when Ghanaian sharpshooter Yakubu Yusif struck to tie the match at 2-2. Sikkim United will be hoping for better luck in Goa.
