MAPUSA: Sinquerim Sports Club managed to hold Clube Sao Miguel De Taleigao in a goalless draw in the inaugural match of the 6th Vedanta Women’s League organised by Goa Football Association played at Duler Stadium here on Sunday.
Though the ICC T20 World Cup was in progress between Pakistan and England, it did not dampen the spirits of the guardians of the players who came in large numbers to cheer their wards. The match was delayed for almost 20 minutes as the field doctor was not present.
It was Taleigao eves that had better of ball possession and had number of scoring opportunities in the first session of play, but it was the last line of Sinquerim defence, marshalled by Mahina Behera and keeper Sejal Naik who time and again curbed the attack.
Taleigao’s striker Blessica Rodrigues was a thorn for the Sinquerim defence, who came twice close in breaking the deadlock. In the 2nd minute her strike from close was blocked for a corner while in the 32nd minute keeper Sejal thwarted her attempt in one to one situation.
On crossing over, Taleigao outfit dictated terms. In the 73rd minute a 25-yard shot from Keenda was haphazardly collected by keeper Sejal but before substitute Macklinesara Ribeiro could connect of the rebound keeper Sejaj collected.
Two minutes later Macklinesara was unlucky as her placement from outside the penalty box travelled just past the goal post.
The player of the match was awarded to Sinquerim keeper Sejal Umesh Naik by Pravin Dabolkar, GFA’s executive committee member.
