MARGAO: Host Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club edged past Sporting Club Davorlim 7-6 via the tie-breaker to lift the 34th Sao Jose de Areal Panchayat Cup football tournament, at Padribhat ground, Sao Jose de Areal, on recently. In the first half, SJ de Areal were leading 1-0.
SJ de Areal dominated the proceedings and surged ahead through Cheston Gomes’s header in the 20th minute of a cross by Mario Barretto.
Crossing over, SC Davorlim equalized through Stanly Miranda’s header of a cross by Piedade Colaco in the 45th minute.
In the ensuing tie-breaker, SJ de Areal scored through Francis Barretto, Silvestre Carvalho, Aggio Antao, Monty Valadres, Ashwin Travasso and David Colaco while SC Davorlim converted through Wengson, Paxton Gomes, Standly Miranda, Suny Viegas and Piedade Colaco.
The winners were awarded Rs 40,000 and a trophy while the runners-up had to be content with Rs 30,000 and a trophy.
The individual prizes awarded to First scorer of the final: Cheston Gomes of SJ de Areal. Best midfielder of the final: Paxton Gomes of SC Davorlim. Best goalkeeper of the final: Aggio Antao of SJ de Areal. Best defender of the tournament: Piedade Colaco of SC Davorlim. Hero of the match: Francis Barretto of SJ de Areal.
MLA of Velim Constituency, Benjamin Silva was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up in the presence of guest of honour, Fr Richard Pinheiro, parish priest of St Joseph church, Sao Jose de Areal and ZP member Cleofacio Dias, club officials and other dignitaries.
Club president, Gabriel Endro welcomed. Valent Fernandes and Albert Terez introduced the guests.
Savio Tereza compered and Anthony D’Costa proposed the vote of thanks.
