CURCHOREM: Sao Jose de Areal got the better of St Anthony Sports Club, Assolda 6-4 via the tie-breaker to grab top honours in the final of the 17th all-Goa inter-village football tournament, organized by Immaculate Conception Sports Club (ICSC), Avedem-Paroda, at Avedem panchayat ground, recently.
The teams adopted aggressive approach in the opening session and kept the crowds on their toes. The defenders of both the teams were very active in their respective citadel. The score was 1-1 during the regular time.
As the match progressed both the teams missed number of opportunities but could not increase the tally and finally the match ended with tie-breaker where Sao Jose de Areal proved better than Assolda.
Sao Jose de Areal were richer by Rs 40,000 while Assolda had to be content with Rs.30,000. Johnson Fernandes was adjudged best goalkeeper and the first scorer of the final award went to Sunny Fernandes.
Quepem MLA Chandrakant Babu Kavlekar was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of sarpanch of Avedem Panchayat Shanti Mascarenhas, President of the club Valenth Fernandes and National footballer Mohan Naik.
