YBT started off on an attacking note as defender Paulin D’Silva made a promising run into the rival territory and squared the ball to striker Dhillon Fernandes, who was well positioned to slot past Taleigao goalkeeper Risven Fernandes in the fourth minute. However, assistant referee Savio Fernandes blundered and flagged Dhillon off-side, which triggered the fury of the YBT supporters.
Four minutes later, Taleigao had a chance to open the scoring but Marc Fernandes shot wide with only YBT goalkeeper Parvaraj Joshi at his mercy.
After the half hour mark, Taleigao were building up momentum but a Vincy Fernandes’ long-ranger missed the mark narrowly.
Subsequently, Taleigao surged ahead in the 37th minute after the experienced Levino Pereira cleverly intercepted a back-pass from YBT defender Allwick Fernandes and beat goalkeeper Parvaraj with a deft placement.
Changing over, YBT tried hard to score the equalizer and their best chance came in the 52nd minute as Chadwick Furtado essayed a long ball to Columban Noronha, who beat the rival custodian but his effort was cleared by YBT’s Mahadev Talwar at the goal-line.
Four minutes later, Taleigao’s Vincy Fernandes handled the ball in the danger zone but referee Prasad Surlakar overlooked the incident, as YBT’s protest was given a deaf ear, despite manger Nazareth D’Silva entering the ground. The fourth official, Amrut Salgaocar did not take any action on the YBT manager and the game continued.
Taleigao scored their second in the 83rd minute through Pramod Mardolkar, who broke the off-side trap and slotted home past Parvaraj.
In the added time, Columban was brought down in the box by Taleigao’s substitute defender Gary Pereira but the referee did not award a penalty. The game came to a standstill after the YBT manager entered the pitch for the second time in protest but still the match officials did not send him off.
The situation tensed up after the final whistle as YBT team officials and supporters entered the referee’s room and manhandled assistant referee Savio Fernandes.
The police were called and assistant referee Savio and YBT officials have filed complaints against each other.
Surprisingly, there were no GFA members present to take stock of the situation. The GFA has made no efforts to provide security to the match officials even after a similar situation broke out on Friday during the Corps of Signals and YBT game where the Signals team confronted the match officials.
