PANJIM: In a keenly contested match, Our Lady of Snows High School Raia prevailed over CRSC, Navelim by a solitary first half goal to clinch the top spot in 3rd Alvernaz and Lalush memorial under-14 football tournament organized by Salcete Football Club at Chinchinim church ground, Chinchinim.
In spite of the slippery and heavy ground conditions, the young lads put up a spirited display which kept the sizable crowd that had braved the heavy rain to see and encourage the young and talented players in action, entertained.
Our Lady of Snows dominated the early exchanges and pushed their rivals on the back-foot.
The all-important goal was scored by Snows’ skillful striker Suvraj Patil in the 12th minute.
Suvraj pounced on a loose ball from a long throw-in by his captain, Roland and scored with a deft placement.
Undeterred by the setback, CRSC fought back and came close to scoring on two occasions, but were unlucky that tries from their promising striker Ronaldo missed the target narrowly.
At the fag end, CRSC?tried their best to get back into the game but to no avail as the Our Lady of Snows defence stood tall in protecting their citadel and keeping their slender lead intact.
Our Lady of Snows received Rs 7,000 and a trophy while CRSC Navelim had to be content with Rs 5,000.
Fr Kinley D’Cruz was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Braz Alemao and Antonio Sequeira, sarpanch of Chinchinim who were the guests of honour.
Jacinto Fernandes welcomed. Later, he proposed the vote of thanks.
