MAPUSA: Holders Sporting Clube de Goa will look to defend their title against the challengers FC Goa in the Police Cup final which will be held at Duler Stadium today.
It was not any easy outing for Flaming Oranje Coach Francisco Vaz to see his team make it to the finals as four of their best players were being selected for the Santosh Trophy. However they managed to get the better of Sesa Football Academy by a hard fought 1-0 win in the quarters and later stunned I-League Churchill Brothers 2-0 in the semis.
For FC Goa coach Clifford Miranda it was the same, as their development squad were without their former players Liston Colaco, Princeton Rebello, Savior Gama who have been promoted to the senior squad, Kingslee Fernandes also was temporarily called for the selection by the senior coach, and thus Kingslee also did not play in the ongoing tournament.
Also three players were being called for the Santosh Trophy. The team made it to the finals getting the better of Guardian Angel in the quarters and Dempo SC in the semis.
However, both the coaches who have inducted number of their youngsters from the age groups have shown lots of promises with their performance in the tournament.
Bosco George said, “The Goa Police Cup was then started by Prabakar Sinari-IGP, but due his to poor health will not come to wistness the final.” George further added, “Goa being a football loving state with great passion for the game of football, it does not remain a game for entertainment only, but a means by which Police can connect with the community and this could go long way towards modern Community Policing and bridging the gap between the Police and the Public at large.”
“Goa Police Cup” the tallest Silverware Trophy 5 feet 4 inches which was sponsored by Shantilal Gosalia is one of the oldest tournament, which started way back in 1968 and is being organized by Goa Police cell, where in this 16th Edition Goa Police Cup, 12 teams from GPL have participated in the tournament.
