Having pulled out of I-League, Mahindra United will face Sporting Clube de Goa in an ONGC League match at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda tomorrow at 4 p.m.
Sporting Clube de Goa are at the bottom with just 21 points from 23 encounters and they have two matches still to play. They need three points tomorrow to ward off the relegation threat.
Sporting will be bolstered by the return of Junior after one match suspension. Mahindra United have the psychological advantage of having beaten Sporting in the first leg.
Sporting, however, will be without the services of midfielder Bibiano Fernandes, due to double bookings.
“It’s a major game. All matches here are must wins for us. There is no other option to escape relegation. The way we have played in some matches, we do not deserve to be in this position,” stated coach Vishwas.
“I told the players they should give everything and win the match,” said Vishwas.
Mahindra United, following a sequence of disappointing results, are determined to bring their campaign back on track by coming up with convincing performances in the remaining three matches to grab the second position. Coach Booth said they desperately need the three points to keep their slim title hopes still alive.
Having done extremely well for a major part of the campaign, Mahindra United found themselves well positioned ahead of Dempo at one stage, but thereafter lost their grip on the title race and gradually drifted away, allowing their closest title rivals to march ahead and enjoy a clear upper hand.
The Red Devils will miss the services of Kali Alaudeen as the centre-back has been ruled out due to a knee injury while a double booking has also forced influential Serbian midfielder Svetozar Mijin to give a miss.
When asked for his reaction to his club’s sudden move to disband the team, manager Henry Menezes, said: “No comment.”
