Around 300 senior citizens enthusiastically participated in 3rd All-Goa Senior Citizens Sports Meet organised by Forum for Senior Citizens of India in association with the Sports Authority of Goa at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, Margao on Sunday.
Eduardo Faleiro, Commissioner for NRI affairs was the chief guest and spoke on the occasion. He called upon voluntary organizations such as the Forum for Senior Citizens of India to take advantage of the different schemes promoted by the Union Ministry for Social Justice and Empowerment. “One such scheme formulated by the ministry is an intergrated programme for the elderly,” stated Faleiro.
The event was held in two categories for men and women in the age group of 60 to 65 years and 60 and above.
The participants competed in indoor and outdoor activities. The senior citizens of South Goa excelled in volleyball, football and tug-of-war.
“I congratulate the senior citizens forum and SAG for successfully organising the 3-day sports meet and especially for creating awareness about the need for good health and fitness among the elderly. A 30-minute walk for five days a week will definitely do a lot of good,” Faleiro concluded.
Diago D’Sousa, secretary, Senior Citizens Forum was also present. Eknath Naik, president, Senior Citizens Forum, Margao welcomed. Narayan Dessai, vice-president proposed the vote of thanks.
