MARGAO: St Anthony’s Sports Club, Assolda registered a fluent 3-1 win over Varca Sports Club to cruise into the quarter-finals of All-Goa Fr Basilio Andrade memorial inter-village football tournament organized by A.A De Majorda, at Musson ground, Majorda on Monday.
St Anthony led 2-1 at half time. St Anthony held the upper hand in both the sessions and kept their opponents on the back foot. St Anthony’s breakthrough came in the early moments of the game when Stanley Hadangali slotted past the rival goalkeeper with snap shot.
Spurred by the early success, St Anthony intensified their attacks and tormented the rival defence with sporadic raids. Socorro Fernandes doubled the lead when he punted the ball to the far corner of the net.
Down by 0-2, Varca Sports Club regrouped quickly and instantly took the fight to the rival camp and Salman Fernandes reduced the deficit.
Crossing over, St Anthony continued to enjoy the lion’s share of exchanges and the rival defenders had a tough time in controlling the rampaging forwards.
Velson Fernandes drove the last nail into the rival coffin late in the second half.
