St Anthony Colva champions

The teams were locked 2-2 in normal time but David, Menino, Mayron and Jovisco kept their cool for the winners in the ensuing penalty shoot-out

MARGAO: St Anthony Sports Club, Colva prevailed over St Anthony Sports Club, Assolda 6-4 via the tie-breaker to lift the Curtorim Gymkhana Golden Jubilee Cup inter-village football tournament, organized by Curtorim Gymkhana, at church ground, Curtorim, Sunday. The teams were tied 2-2 in the regulation period.
St Anthony Assolda broke the deadlock in the 10th minute through Joseph Fernandes, who finished with a deft placement.
The equalizer for St Anthony Colva came in the 30th minute when striker Jovisco sent in a delightful pass to Keith Rodrigues, who wasted no time and punted the ball to the far corner of the net as Assolda goalkeeper Franky Fernandes was found wanting.
Post resumption, St Anthony Assolda created many openings and Sunny Fernandes beat the rival goalkeeper with a clinical finish, 2-1.
Instead of getting demoralized, Keith Rodrigues restored parity, 2-2.
In the penalty shoot-out, David Costa, Menino Hilario, Mayron Fernandes and Jovisco Fernandes were on target for St Anthony Colva while Sucorro Fernandes and Joseph Fernandes converted for St Anthony Assolda.
St Anthony Colva were richer by Rs 50,050 while their opponents had to settle for Rs 35,050.
Individual prizes were awarded to First scorer of the final Joseph Fernandes of St Anthony Assolda; Best midfielder of the final David Costa of St Anthony Colva; Best goalkeeper of the final Jovisco Fernandes of St Anthony Colva; Man of the final Keith Rodrigues of St Anthony Colva.
Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of GFA President Elvis Gomes; GFA vice-president (South) Schubert Furtado; Deputy Director of Sports and Youth Affairs Juliana Gurjao e Colaco; Proprietor of Royal Caterers, Curtolrim, Peter Dias; Assistant parish priest of St Alex church, Curtorim Fr Luis Pinto e Lourenco.
Former international footballer and ex-coach Roberto Fernandes; GFA members Anthony Pango, Anthony Leo Fernanndes, John Silva, Curtorim Acting sarpanch Simon Baretto, Gromiko Fernandes, ex headmaster of Our Lady of Rosary High School, Fatorda; Jacob Ataide, proprietor of K and K Steels; Gabriel Silva, ex Panvel footballer were the special invitees.
Earlier, Arnaldo Costa, president of Curtorim Gymkhana and also the GFA Executive member welcomed. Joaquim Fernandes, general secretary of Curtorim Gymkhana proposed the vote of thanks. John Rodrigues compered. In all, 16 teams participated.
