PANJIM: St Anthony High School, Monte de Guirim, defeated Holy Cross High School, Bastora, to emerge champions in the 13th Pioneer Trophy for All-Goa Women and Girls U-14 5-a-side Hockey Tournament in honour of Fr Bento Martins, founder, Society of Pilar, organised by Pilar Fathers Sonshi, Ponda, at Peddem Sports Complex, Mapusa, recently.
Fr Agnel Central School, Pilar, won the third place.
A total of five schools participated in the U-14 girls’ category, namely St Anthony High School, Monte de Guirim; Holy Cross High School, Bastora; Fr Agnel Central School, Pilar; Holy Cross High School, Siolim and Honda High School, Honda.
In women’s category, Crozen Society, Bastora, outplayed Siolim Sharp Shooters. Young Sports Hockey Club finished third.
Five teams participated in the women category namely San Antonio Warriors, Guirim; Young Sports Hockey Club, Crozen Society, Bastora; Siolim Sharp Shooters and Goa Hockey Promoters. Pilar Fathers, Sonshi-Honda, has a programme titled ‘Sports for Youth Development’, especially empowering girls through hockey in Sattari Taluka.
David Furtado, director, David Furtado Dance Academy, dance Choreographer and former Goa hockey captain was the chief guest. Fr Caje Barreto, secretary, Central Mission Commission Society of Pilar was the guest of honour, and Gabriel Pereira, Goa’s Ambassador for Organ Donation ‘Mohan Foundation’ was the special invitee.
