MAJORDA: St. Anthony SC, Assolda edged past Fr. Agnel YC, Paroda 2-1 to enter the semi-finals of the 20th Fr Basilio Andrade Memorial football tournament, at Musson ground, Majorda, on Friday.
Assolda’s Succour Fernandes and Sufik Shaikh missed chances to score in the third and sixth minutes.
Later in the tenth minute, Paroda’s Jaison Dias shot wide.
The Paroda team took the lead in the 17th minute through Master Menezes’ downward header off Manish Oliver’s cross.
Both the teams tried to show urgency to score goals, during which time the play was confined to the midfield.
There were forays at either end but both the teams defenders proved their might.
After resumption of play in the second half, St. Anthony, Assolda made a brilliant move from the centre circle wherein striker Irfan Yadwad latched on the left side with sheer speed and wasted no time in sending the ball to the far corner of the Paroda net in the 40th minute to score the equaliser.
Paroda’s Manish Oliveira and Jolitan Dias combined well and tried their best to breach the Assolda defensive line but were unsuccessful as Johnson Fernandes was brilliant under the Assolda bar.
Assolda’s attacking medio Richard D’Sa got his name on the score sheet in the 48th minute with an angular shot which did not gave much chance to the opponent keeper.
