SANGUEM: St Anthony Sports Club, Assolda, emerged winners in the 19th All Goa 11-a-side inter-village golden jubilee football tournament organised by Uguem Rising Club at URC ground, Uguem, defeating Sao Jose De Areal 4-2 via tie-breaker after the score read 1-1 at the end of the regulation time.
On Sunday, the final witnessed by a large festive ground saw both teams coming out with their best display of football tactics which kept the crowd on their toes for every minute of the game.
The first goal of the match came through the boots of Alrich Peixoto of St Anthony SC in the 15th minute of the match. With one goal down, Sao Jose De Areal fought back like tigers and soon levelled the score through a snap shot taken by Aliston D’Costa following a corner kick.
After changing ends, both teams continued to display their best soccer but could not increase the lead due to the attacking play by the rival defenders.
Sao Jose De Areal came close to score their second goal in the mid second half but the try was smartly saved by St Anthony SC goalkeeper.
The match witnessed a couple of tense movements at the fag end of the match, but was aptly dealt with by the match referee.
The winners took home a cash prize of Rs 60,550 and a trophy while the runners-up had to be content with a cash prize of Rs 40,550 and a trophy. On the occasion, URC felicitated gold medalist of National Games Babu Gaonkar and Special Olympics gold medalist Siya Sarode.
Sanguem MLA and Minister for Social Welfare Subhash Phal Dessai was the chief guest for the prize distribution while President of Goa Football Association Dr Caitano Fernandes, Cumbarjua MLA Rajesh Faldessai and PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral were the guests of honour.
The prize distribution function was compered by Galdino Dias while Vitorino Colaco proposed the vote of thanks.
