MAPUSA: St Anthony High School, Duler and St Clara High School, Assonora won their respective matches to move ahead in the second round of under-17 boys inter-school football tournament Bardez zone organized by Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, at Tivim ground, Thursday.
Sensational Stanley Mendes scored a fine hat-trick to guide St Anthony to a comfortable 6-0 rout of Dnyanprassarak Vidyalaya, Mapusa. The winners led 4-0 at half time.
Sherwn Mathew, Stein Mendonca and Savio Pereira were the other scorers for St Anthony.
The Duler side were superior in all departments and it literally rained in goals as not even heavy showers could stop the young boys from going out all guns blazing.
Stanley was in thick of action right from the start as he cleverly set up Savio through on goal but the latter miss timed his kick right in front of the rival goal.
However, Sherwin opened the floodgates with a beautiful right-footer from outside the box which found the top right corner as the rival keeper could only wave the ball goodbye.
Minutes later, Stanley’s power-packed shot deflected off a rival defender and fell to Stein, who finished calmly, 2-0.
Soon t was hard-working Stanley’s turn to get on the score-sheet and he did it in style, skilfully dribbling into the box and then scoring easily from inside the six-yard area.
Just before the break, Stanley once again stamped his authority with an identical goal for his brace.
Changing over, St Anthony kept the momentum going as Savio saw his attempt kiss the crossbar but soon scored from close range after the rival custodian fumbled in his collection.
Dnyanprassarak lads were left wanting and were just waiting for the referee to blow the final whistle, only for Stanley to notch his hat-trick, 6-0.
In the earlier match, St Clara made short work of Saraswat Vidyalaya 4-0. St Clara led 2-0 at half time.
Gauresh Bugde gave them the lead while Nandesh Kaisukar doubled the advantage and then added another goal after the break with a scorching long ranger that dipped into the rival goal. Soon, Diptesh Naik did well to outpace his marker and finish neatly to make it 4-0. St Clara’s Akash Kudnekar was unlucky as his volley hit the crossbar in the fag end.
