St Anthony take home Alvernaz & Lalush Trophy

PANJIM, MAY 10 St Anthony's Club, Colva stunned a capacity crowd as they edged out Varca Sports Club 4-2 via the tie-breaker to emerge champions in 3rd Alvernaz and Lalush Alemao memorial soccer tournament, organised by Churchill Brothers Sports Club, at Varca ground, on Sunday.

St Anthony’s Club, Colva stunned a capacity crowd as they edged out Varca Sports Club 4-2 via the tie-breaker to emerge champions in 3rd Alvernaz and Lalush Alemao memorial soccer tournament, organised by Churchill Brothers Sports Club, at Varca ground, on Sunday.
St Anthony were the dominant side right from kickoff but could not see the goal.
 Nelson Fernandes’ powerful attempt early in the game was parried away by Reagan Alemao.
For Varca, former Churchill players, Wilroy D’Cruz and Elvis Fernandes took charge of the midfield and repeatedly made moves for striker Collin to fire. Collin did his best up front but the final touch was missing.
At the end of regulation time, both teams failed to open an account.
In the ensuing tie-breaker, Nelson Gomes, Cedric Fernandes, John Barreto and Clyde Pacheco were on target for the winners while Mohammad Shaikh and Elvis Fernandes reduced the margin for Varca.
Following individual prizes were awarded: Best disciplined team — St Savio, Calangute; Best player — Elvis Fernandes, Varca; Best midfielder — Armando Fernandes, Varca; Most promising player — Kim Alemao, Varca; Highest scorer — Columbo Norohna, Varca; Best goalkeeper — Menino Falcao, St Anthony; Best striker — Leslie Fernandes, St Anthony; Best defender — John Barreto, St Anthony;  First scorer — Nelson Gomes, St Anthony.
St Anthony received Rs 60,000 while Varca had to settle with Rs 40,000.
Chief Minister Digambar Kamat was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of PWD Minister Churchill Alemao, Urban Development Minister Joaquim Alemao, Valanka Alemao, South Goa ZP Chairperson Maria Rebello, Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, Dr Susana de Souza, sarpanch Vincentina Fernandes and Fr Luis Coutinho.
