MAPUSA: St. Anthony’s, Marna, registered a 2-0 win over Geno FC in a GFA’s First Division league match at Duler stadium, here on Friday. There was no score at the break.
The teams played cautiously in the first session, there being just one attempt by each side. Marna’s custodian Jordon Fernandes was tested just once and he managed to sway the ball for a corner from Geno’s Sohan Mardolkar.
Then, a long range rasping shot by Videsh Samant sailed just inches over Geno’s crossbar.
Just five minutes into the second session and St. Anthony’s Marna forged ahead as they were awarded a penalty kick after Shubham Malvankar handled the ball prompting referee Sunil Nanodkar to point to the
dreaded spot. Marna’s stopper back Sahil Pomburphekar stepped forward and scored.
Minutes later, Marna’s skipper Sangam Pednekar darted inside the 18-yard box and drilled a hot blooded shot which was blocked by a rival defender.
Marna kept on exerting pressure but Geno’s goalkeeper Akshat Hadkonkar brought off two out-of-the blue saves denying first, Dalesh Pednekar and later Sangam.
Marna managed to consolidate the lead in the 70th minute as Sangam Pednekar connected a long ball from substitute Sadanand
Dabolkar.
Geno had two chances to score, but Krishna Gawas’ placement was brilliantly blocked by Marna’s custodian Jordon and later, Under-20 Soham shot into the waiting hands of custodian Jordon from close.
