MAPUSA/RAIA: St Anthony’s SC, Marna, managed to edge past St Savio’s SC 2-1 in the GFA’s Division I League match played at Poriat ground, Calangute, on Friday.
St Anthony’s SC colts dominated the first session and went into the breather with a one goal cushion through a neat finish by Pushparaj Mandrekar off a through pass by Alesh Sawant, 1-0.
As the match progressed, Alesh Sawant missed two open sitters, while Pushparaj also saw two of his efforts being saved by St Savio’s SC keeper Soma Korgaonkar.
St Savio’s SC did shine in patches but saw two close attempts by Sahil Jalmi and Latesh Mandrekar being saved by custodian Jordon Fernandes. On crossing ends, in the very 4th minute, St Savio’s SC had a chance to level terms but substitute Shadab Sheikh’s strike from close was blocked by rival defender for a corner.
Just three minutes later, Pushparaj Mandrekar beat the offside trap off a floater from medio Dalesh Pednekar and scored past the onrushing keeper Soma, 2-0.
St Savio’s SC colts exerted tremendous pressure and should have reduced the margin in the 65th minute, but St Anthony’s SC custodian Jordon brought a brave block from Selwyn D’Souza’s strike from inside the 6-yard box.
Finally, in the 78th minute, Alwyn Fernandes connected a low cross from Selwyn D’Souza to make it 2-1 and bring back St Savio’s SC into the match.
At Duler Stadium, here, A A de Moira drubbed Goa Velha SC 7-1. Anantha Krishnankar netted a hat-trick, with Imamsab Gledegudd, Michael Dias, Salam Singh (2) adding their names to the scorer’s list, while Schubert Borges scored a consolation goal for Goa Velha SC.
Santa Cruz Cavelossim gain 3 points
Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim scored a hard-fought 3-2 win over Goa Police, at Rosary church ground, Navelim, on Friday.
Goa Police were leading 2-1 at the breather.
Aeren Figueiredo, Melson Fernandes and Cindroy Furtado scored a goal each for Santa Cruz Cavelossim, while Tarak Khandolkar netted a brace for Goa Police.
